Art Knowledge: Lesson 7
Drawing the figure or human body is called life
drawing. We can become more skilled at life drawing from studying pictures
or live models.

The basic guide for body proportion is in head lengths:
The figure of an average adult is 7 head lengths
The length of body, hips to toes is about 4 head lengths
The top of head to bottom of chest 2 head lengths
The length of pelvis to bottom butt region 1 head length
Two heads from elbow to end of extended fingertips.

At some point we realize that natural body positions
are very important to expressing action and story.

Reference Guide Lines (below) may
help to capture the pose. head oval, shoulder angle, spine length and
angle,
arms to shoulder and legs to hip joints. Make these
guide lines very light so you can add details and mass
over them as you complete the sketch.

THE
ART SKILL LESSONS (DEMOS) COVERED IN
THE MINI - ART SERIES:
PRACTICE SHOULD GO ALONG WITH
EACH LESSON
APPLY PRINCIPLES TO YOUR OWN ART EXPRESSION.
THESE SKILLS APPLY EASILY TO ALMOST
ANY AGE OR CLASS LEVEL FROM AGE 10 UP
Lesson 1: Drawing
the easy way. The difference between,
compositions, studies and sketches.
Thumbnail sketches. What are paradigms?
Paradigms that apply to creativity.
Three parts in any creative art project.
Terms: line, space, shape, art media.
Lesson 2: Review E-Z drawing. Expressive
lines, Descriptive lines, Shapes. 2 dimensional forms, 3 dimensional
masses, shading, illumination. Using tone in drawing and sketching
- Reminder: please have a small plastic container to use for wash
drawings next week
Lesson 3: Exploring drawing 3 dimensional
objects, What makes a form appear to be 3 dimensional? turning
2d into 3d forms. Interpreting common objects into 3 dimensional
components, apply methods of shading
Lesson 4: Learning to show depth using,
simple perspective. Size changes, Overlapping, Distant horizon,
raising on picture plain. Weekly sketch book assignments

Art Skills: Lesson 7
SKILLS TO WORK ON IN THIS LESSON: Continue drawing the E-Z way
to produce straight and curves Applying tone (gradations light to dark)
brush tonal shading using dry medium (chalk, pastel)
Recognizing logical positions of the surfaces (planes) that comprise any
3d form.
Techniques that produce tone or shading:
1. Closely study the pose to try to understand the expression of body.
Beginners often suggest the body in a stiff or expressionless
way. At a certain point we realize that every natural body positions are
very important to expressing action and meaning.
2. Guide lines are helpful in establishing
the proportions.

3.
Here is a quick sketch method which can be used to express
a pose or action in a "short hand" method.
* 'Gesture Drawing' is really no more than a controlled
"scribble" which records a quick impression
of the body action of your model
.
*Gesture drawing is a quick sketch
method that attempts to capture the expression of the
body position
