We are not Christians by virtue of the fact that our family associates with a church denomination. My family went to a Methodist church. My mother was a lady who taught “temperance lessons.” Her ministry was proclaiming the evils of drinking and smoking. When I was in the military my dog tags announced my religion was Methodist. I went to Sunday school for years and was confirmed a member after I memorized the books of the Bible. In all of my church house experience I was never part of the authentic, called out church of God. I didn't even know there was such a thing. This transformation came after I had sat in the pews of Lutheran, Presbyterian, Church of Christ and Congregational denominations. I will not go into details here on how I left religion and became a Spiritually renewed believer, a milestone in my life. That is available elsewhere on this site.
The gospel is the 'good news' of how we can be rescued from the fate of millions of others on the planet, who are fallen and don't even know it. They are not yet the children of God but they can become the children of God if their heart moves them to say yes to the "gift of God." It is a free gift. How will you respond?
We have an enemy. He is the adversary who makes every effort to keep us blind to the facts of life, death, redemption and judgment. The 'god of this world' promises pleasure without any concern about consequences to living a life of self-indulgence. The attributes of this world are governed by the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and pride of life. (1 John 2:16) This adversary is a liar and a murderer. He is the ruler of this present fallen world. But you can be certain, this will not stand. His days are numbered.
Making a decision to follow Jesus the Messiah is not like joining a club or another organization. You don't just sign up or go to a class and add your name to the roll. Churches have their own rules about how to make you a viable member of the heaven bound children of God. Some of these rules are formalist and demanding but these rules are not those authorized by Jesus but by men. According to the gospel we don't make the grade by being good enough but by receiving the gift of eternal life which was paid in full by the one who shed his blood, and died on the cross for you and me.
