Waters of evening,
how you gleam and shine!
What wonder you evoke from out my heart!
What longing for a light no longer mine!
I would embrace you, bathe, and steal your soul
Could it to mine lend its bright radiance
Restore my sheaf of brightness, make me whole,
And cleanse me of the dust of old offence.
But, even as I sit and gaze, your lights sublime
Fade to a glimmer, dimming, vanishing
Even as my light did once in ancient time
When my transgression brought my banishing.
