Art Knowledge: Lesson 7
Drawing the figure or human body is called life
drawing. We can become more skilled at life drawing from studying pictures
or live models.
The basic guide for body proportion is in head lengths:
The figure of an average adult is 7 head lengths
The length of body, hips to toes is about 4 head lengths
The top of head to bottom of chest 2 head lengths
The length of pelvis to bottom butt region 1 head length
Two heads from elbow to end of extended fingertips.
At some point we realize that natural body positions
are very important to expressing action and story.
Reference Guide Lines (below) may
help to capture the pose. head oval, shoulder angle, spine length and
arms to shoulder and legs to hip joints. Make these
guide lines very light so you can add details and mass
over them as you complete the sketch.
*Gesture drawing is a quick sketch method that
attempts to capture the expression of the body position
