Subject: Outdoor or Indoor selections.
Draw forms exactly as framed in your viewfinder.
Design Emphasis: Contrast close and
distant objects. This means include both objects
that are very close to you as well as objects
that are a good distance away from you.
HINT: Near forms may "frame" the
scene.
Include outlines to do basic breakup. Add details
and tone.
Number of drawings: 1 or 2 in a class

detail
Use Viewfinder: Select interesting natural
view or object that has good detail. Detail
consists of small patterns of line and shape.
Detail is what fills up larger areas of certain
forms.
Detail can be decorative and patterned.
Number of drawings: 1 or 2 in a class
period.

Observation Skills: Use Viewfinder:
Locate a scene that emphasizes Vertical Pattern
or Horizontal pattern. Vertical movements are
lines that run up and down. Horizontal movements
are lines that move side to side.
Design Concept: Rhythm from repetition
of line movements:
Using Pattern and Vertical and Horizontal Rhythms
Outdoor observation;
Develope your tones to bring out the white
or black areas.
Number of drawings: 2 in a class period;
one vertical composition the other will be
a horizontal pattern design.

Technique - Skills: Shade and blend
using multi colors to Find a picture with good
color: Practice using several colors together
in a blend.
Size of drawing: 9 x 12 use 1 inch border.

Drawing Medium: Drawing on Toned (gray
or brown) paper.
The composition will have dark areas drawn
with charcoal or other dark media. Highlight
tones are drawn with a light color such as
chalk or liquid white medium. The middle tone
of the paper carries most of the tonality.
Subject Selection: Objects or display
that is set up indoors.
Still life objects may include hardware, drapery,
fruit, plant forms, food and other kinds of
objects or materials; arrange and view.
Size of Drawing: 18x24 with a 1.5 inch
border.
Time to complete: 2 class days

Design from Still Life Setup
Set several objects in an interesting group.
Select objects of different sizes and shapes
and textures. Use a darker toned paper.
Drawing Medium: Draw outlines and dark
shadow areas in a black marker. fill open areas
with cray pas (oil pastels) These colors will
appear vivid and bright on the dark back ground.
Size of designs: 12 x 16 inches with 1 inch
border.
Number of drawings: Three or 4 or more
complete designs, variations of the setup objects,
in one week period. ( One a day. These are
easy and fun sketches.)

Draw using interpretive approach. How do you
want to portray yourself?
Use a mirror or an existing photo but feel
free to use distortion or even an abstract
approach to interpretation. Colors can be interpretive.
Size of drawing: 12 x 16 inches with 1 inch
border.
Time to complete: 3class days

Project #6 Pencil & Water color fantasy.
Drawing Medium: Begin to draw with graphite
pencil. Add water color washes to complete
the sketch. (Be sure to use enough water to
make a flowing wash.)
Design Idea: Fantasy Invention. Invent
a strange or unusual place or environment.
Place forms within this environment You may
select elements from photos and juxtapose (rearrange)
on a paste-up model
Size of drawing: 12 x 16 inches with 1 inch
border.
Time to complete: 3class days

Project #7 Building a sense of form and 3d-ness.
Design Idea: Your teacher will give you
a drawing of an unusual shape. You will turn
it into a 3d form. You will determine its 3d
form and add tone to make it look shaded and
solid.

Drawing Medium: Markers and pastel colors
to develop modeling.
Time to complete: 2 class days
